US Jones Act Shipbuilding

Image
America, we have a problem!!!!! 50 years ago James Lovell, the commander of Apollo 13, made a similar call to Houston that tested a Nation on the edge of its chairs until the successful landing of our astronauts. What is the challenge today? Our critical Jones Act and RRF fleets are aging and we are not rebuilding new assets quickly enough to maintain the critical mass needed to stay competitive. We estimate that we will have to replace and/or build over 10,000 new modern assets by 2035 to support domestic container trades or the burgeoning U.S.Offshore Wind business. That being the case we have to re-energize and engage our commercial ship-building industry like we did during WW II when the Nation as a whole built over 5,000 marine assets in less than 3.5 years. Look it up, that’s a fact. How did we do it, we assembled standardized series of vessels from Kits at every large and small yard available. Mass manufacturing was invented by Mr. Ford. TOEPFER TRANSPORT GMBH

The following three lines from a recent Toepfer Transport GMBH presentation say it all!!!! In 2020 more than 60% of all cargo shipped from or to the EU was short-sea cargo. In some States (countries) this ratio is far above 70%. Short-sea shipping is the backbone of the European economy. Startling and stunning. How can the EU take advantage of its extensive waterways and coastal ports? They have short sea ships (feeders) that make their transportation systems and distribution networks function. They have thousands of feeders and are building more. What do they have that we don’t? Feeders,  How many do we have? 000000000000000.0000000. Exactly none. How many are we building? 000000000000.0000000. Exactly none. Are the Europeans smarter than we are?  I guess so. In this they sure are. Come on people!!!!!! Take your heads out of the sand and look around and learn.  Others have what we need.  Can we build small ships? Absolutely, so we better start yesterday instead of b...
