NBS Article: How to Motivate People Toward Sustainability

Image
How to Motivate People Toward Sustainability People determine the success of a company’s sustainability initiatives. Seven strategies can motivate everyone from employees to communities. “Alone we can do so little,” said educator and activist Helen Keller . “Together we can do so much.“ It’s easy to focus on the role of leaders, but the success of any initiative requires widespread support. Here are some of the groups that can be valuable allies: Employees implement company initiatives and can contribute ideas based on their specific areas of expertise. Everyone from mid-level managers to operational staff to front-line employees can make a difference. Customers can purchase green products and services and promote the company’s brand. Communities are especially important if your company has a significant local footprint — for example, if you’re engaged in manufacturing or resource extraction. Climate Change and Short Sea Shipping

Image
Climate Change is now at the forefront of our national and worldwide dialogue. Personally, I became interested in the subject of climate change more than two decades ago with the introduction of the EU Marco Polo programs that offered financial incentives to companies that made a transportation modal shift from road to either rail or water transits for their cargo. Twenty-six EU nations underwrote the more than €500 million that was distributed to companies that embraced Marco Polo.      To earn the incentives, companies had to quantify the reduced emissions of CO2, NOx, SOx, and other noxious chemicals into the atmosphere. The scorekeeper was the Marco Polo calculator that compared the emissions attributes between a cargo’s journey on the road versus using a rail and or river/water transit for the same cargo. The advent of the Marco Polo programs coincided with the burgeoning “container revolution” that began in earnest at the turn of the century. ...

History Repeats Itself

History Repeats Itself Moses Taylor, the father-in-law to the original Percy R. Pyne, was keenly interested in transportation, as it had a direct impact on his business. He needed speedy and reliable transportation between New York and Havana and decided to own his own ships to accomplish the goal. Later in his career, he focused on rail, to assist with his growing coal business. Similarly, Percy R. Pyne, IV is interested in transforming American transportation by re-introducing short-sea shipping to the United States. Let’s start by visiting the past. Transportation history seems to go through repetitive cycles of growth, institutionalization, and consolidation. For instance, in the United States between 1850 and 1900, was the era of the railroad barons.  The backdrop was a growing nation that needed rail transportation to carry goods from manufacturing locations to cities in the center of the country as well as to export ports. Many of the manufacturing centers were small communi...

How to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint and save the Environment: One Lightbulb at a Time Green Shipping Line (GSL) has and continues to work towards reducing our carbon footprint. If you would like, you can help our environment and decrease your carbon footprint at home with the following tips sourced from BCHydo Power Smart.  Turn off the lights when you leave the room. Two 100-watt incandescent bulbs switched off an extra 2 hours per day could save you $15 over a year! Take shorter showers. Hot water is expensive, if 2 people in your home cut their shower time by a minute each could save you over $30 per year. Fix anything that is leaking! Fixing a hot water leak in your faucet can save up to $9 per year in energy costs.  Unplug unused electronics! Standby power can account for 10% of an average household’s annual electricity use (and $50 of the electricity bill every year).  Manage your thermostat. If you have electric heat, lower your thermostat by 2 degrees to save 5% o...
