Where We Came From & Where We Are Going: Part 2

The entire Pyne family underwrote Moses’ Princeton endeavors. Being part of America’s history and development endowed all of them with the firm conviction of “paying back” by giving to numerous charities. It was not just a job, but a privilege and a duty.

Princeton was the best example of investing in the future of the nation and in the way the living legacy of our family and ancestors is the education of the thousands of past, present, and future generations of graduates. Pyne Hall, Upper, and Lower Pyne, and the Pyne Library (now known as East Pyne Building) are the select buildings the family allowed its name to be put on, however, the family financed numerous university buildings and paid the University’s operating deficit for 30 of 31 years. In addition, he built his home, Drumthwacket, which today functions as the New Jersey governor’s mansion.

The Moses Taylor Pyne Prize is the most coveted award at Princeton. Justice Sotomeyer and Senator Paul Sarbanes (from the financial reporting legislation Sarbanes-Oxley) are past recipients. Percy Rivington Pyne, Moses Taylor Pyne’s brother, also had a son named Percy, who was a businessman and philanthropist. Percy’s mother was a direct descendant of Richard Stockton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. There are three additional generations of Percy Rivington Pynes which brings us to Percy Rivington Pyne IV.

Percy IV has a background in real estate and a passion for education and shipping, which is no surprise given his ancestry. His father-in-law was the second of three-lifetime trustees of Princeton University. After working near and around shipping for most of his life, in 2011, Percy’s company, American Feeder Lines, began moving cargo from Halifax to Boston, becoming the first American short-sea feeder company in years to operate along the coast. In 2012, the AFL service was suspended (due to needed legislation that was not passed) and Green Shipping Line was formed. To date, Green Shipping Line moved the first new OEM vehicle via container from the U.S. to Europe (Ford Mustangs to Germany), and has been the recipient of three America’s Marine Highway project designations (from the East Coast to the Gulf Coasts as well as across the Great Lakes) and is even involved in the burgeoning offshore wind farm industry. But Percy’s passion is to leave a positive legacy, much like his ancestor, Moses Taylor Pyne did. He wants to bring short sea shipping, which is a greener form of transporting goods, back to the United States. He wants to start the American conversation about fixing our transportation and infrastructure crisis, and he has.

Through the efforts of Percy R. Pyne and the team that he has assembled, not only has the conversation started but progress has been made toward revolutionizing transportation in America. Since May of 2021, GSL has signed a teaming agreement with DEKC Maritime, signed NDA with Siemens Energy and K4 Mobility, began investigation into the refurbishment of existing Jones Act assets, and signed a cooperation agreement with AFL-CIO’s Metal Trades Union; joined union coalition to promote AMH.

Green Shipping Line, with Percy R. Pyne at the helm, is sailing straight to being the leading provider of marine transportation in the United States.  Join us in this endeavor at www.greenshippingline.com!
